Come find the Pop-Up Library booth and browse through a selection of curated art books after touring Maria Guzmán Capron’s exhibition. Then get a chance to meet the artist while enjoying free food! In partnership with Blaffer Art Museum and BAMSA.

Find Your Way with Wayfinding Guided Tours + Featured Performance

Join us for a series of guided tours of Finding Your Way with Wayfinding: Nick Vaughan and Jake Margolin. Meet at the Blaffer Art Museum and tour the exhibition. Embark on a journey across campus to discover Wind Prints, Spray Pieces, and an Artist Book, exploring the artists’ works at Special Collections at M.D. Anderson Library, Student Center, and Jenkins Architecture, Design, and Art Library.

Learn about how the artists practice explores history and combines multiple media and performance to uncover the unheralded histories of LGBTQ communities across the United States. The works in Wayfinding are part of the 50 States project—an ongoing, multi-decade series that will be accomplished throughout the artists’ lifetimes—explores how the histories and legacies of elements found and forgotten affect the contemporary LGBTQ+ experience. Finish the tour at the Jenkins Architecture, Design, and Art Library, where you will converse over refreshments, as well as a prize drawing. 

Organized in partnership with the Jenkins Architecture, Design, and art Library,  Special Collections at the M.D. Anderson Library, and the Student Center.

Students who sign-up for the tours will automatically enter our prize drawing. Sign-up online here.

The last speakers in the 2021-2022 Books and Bytes series are Tom Diehl, associate professor of Architecture at Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design and graphic designer Eric Dowding. They will speak about the creation of Diehl’s newest book Internal: Developing Informed Architectural Languages.

Celebration Days During National Library Week

Monday, April 4: State of America’s Libraries Report released, including Top Ten Frequently Challenged Books of 2021.
Tuesday, April 5: National Library Workers Day, a day for library staff, users, administrators, and Friends groups to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers.
Wednesday, April 6: National Library Outreach Day (formerly National Bookmobile Day), a day to celebrate library outreach and the dedicated library professionals who are meeting their patrons where they are.
Thursday, April 7: Take Action for Libraries Day, a day to rally advocates to support libraries.

Blaffer Art Museum Student Association

The Blaffer Art Museum Student Association (BAMSA) was founded in 2005 with the goal to increase student participation in the museum community, enabling students to enrich their educational experience and the museum to reach an important audience. Today, BAMSA builds a creative community open to students across disciplines that sparks students’ quest for knowledge and pursuit of artistic endeavors.

 Go on a Blind Date with a Book Feb 7-13 

About Event

Show your love to the library by participating in our annual Blind Date with a Book display located at the Architecture, Design, and Art Library starting Feb 7 – 13. Those that “rate their dates” will enter our prize drawing to win a gift card, winners will be announced on Feb 14th.

Rules

♥ First you check-out a “blind date” book without unwrapping it (no cheating).

♥ Read it!

♥ Easy rating forms included, so “rate your date” even if you didn’t finish it.

♥ Return the form to the library to enter our prize drawing.

♥ The more “dates” you rate, the higher chances of winning,  so be sure to come back for more “blind dates.”

♥ Winners will be announced on Valentine’s Day.

Pop-Up Art Library & Studio Sessions  + CollageShop

In partnership with Blaffer Art Museum’s First Friday Studio Sessions, and Public Art UHS browse through a selection of curated art books and museum catalogues thematically related to the museum’s current exhibition Caroline Mesquita: Noctambules. Then participate in collage-making  led by the notable artist Tay Butler’s CollageShop.

CollageShop

CollageShop is presented in partnership with Public Art UHS. This workshop is free and open to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis. Space is limited and registration is required. All workshop materials will be provided to participants.

Tay Butler is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Houston while teaching and studying in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Currently an MFA candidate of the University of Arkansas’ Photography and Studio Art program, he received his BFA in Photography and Digital Media from the University of Houston. His work We Are Still Searching…, currently on view at UH’s Louise J. Moran Fine Arts Courtyard, uses the medium of collage to revisit the Great Migration of six million African Americans out of the South, as well as explores the current Re-Migration to the South. The 14-foot-tall collage includes items such as old magazine advertisements from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s as well as billboard images passed by Black Americans along their north/southward routes.
