Come find the Pop-Up Library booth and browse through a selection of curated art books after touring Maria Guzmán Capron’s exhibition. Then get a chance to meet the artist while enjoying free food! In partnership with Blaffer Art Museum and BAMSA.

Pop-Up’s

The Pop-Up Library program began in 2018 in collaboration with Blaffer Art Museum  to introduce students to two campus resources. Each pop-up consists of curated art books and  featured catalogs for sale.

Studio Sessions

Blaffer Art Museum offers Studio Sessions the first Thursday of every month during the fall and spring semesters. Students are invited to join drop-in tours and hands-on activities to better connect with current exhibitions. The Blaffer regularly partners with the William R. Jenkins Architecture, Design, and Art Library to a host a pop-up at each event where students can check out art books and supplies.

Find Your Way with Wayfinding Guided Tours + Featured Performance

Join us for a series of guided tours of Finding Your Way with Wayfinding: Nick Vaughan and Jake Margolin. Meet at the Blaffer Art Museum and tour the exhibition. Embark on a journey across campus to discover Wind Prints, Spray Pieces, and an Artist Book, exploring the artists’ works at Special Collections at M.D. Anderson Library, Student Center, and Jenkins Architecture, Design, and Art Library.

Learn about how the artists practice explores history and combines multiple media and performance to uncover the unheralded histories of LGBTQ communities across the United States. The works in Wayfinding are part of the 50 States project—an ongoing, multi-decade series that will be accomplished throughout the artists’ lifetimes—explores how the histories and legacies of elements found and forgotten affect the contemporary LGBTQ+ experience. Finish the tour at the Jenkins Architecture, Design, and Art Library, where you will converse over refreshments, as well as a prize drawing. 

Organized in partnership with the Jenkins Architecture, Design, and art Library,  Special Collections at the M.D. Anderson Library, and the Student Center.

Students who sign-up for the tours will automatically enter our prize drawing. Sign-up online here. 

This event is FREE and open to the public.

Library Excellence Awards Ceremony 2022

The University of Houston Libraries celebrated their 2022 Library Excellence Awards ceremony recognizing librarians and staff who achieve meritorious work goals and embody organizational values of collaboration, empathy, and creativity.

Estefania Garcia received the Staff Achievement award. Garcia became an avid promoter of equity and social justice by curating book displays that represent marginalized groups. Garcia is reliable and creative, assisting with promoting materials, creating short story clips on searching for articles, images, videos, and databases, and managing the William R. Jenkins Architecture, Design, and Art Library‘s Instagram account. Garcia is a recent graduate of the School of Art with a wide-ranging knowledge of art programs, and offers invaluable insight on student needs and behaviors when planning outreach and service activities.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Emily Slaughter received the Student Achievement award. Slaughter has an exemplary attitude, along with patience and a willingness to lend help where it’s needed. Currently a graduate student in the Curriculum and Instruction Art Education program, Slaughter’s insight on the learning habits of art students is always most welcome.

New Rare Book Exhibits

Two brand new exhibitions featuring items from the Kenneth Franzheim II Rare Books Room are now on view at the William R. Jenkins Architecture, Design, and Art  Library. 

 On display in the first floor display vitrine there are several furniture catalogs by the iconic furniture company, Herman Miller. Some of the items on display include a brochure for the Eames lounge chair, modular seating catalog, a digital look into The Herman Collection (1955), and more.

Additionally in the Mezzanine display case there are six plates from 450 Años de Lucha: Homenaje al Pueblo Mexicano (1960) (450 Years of Struggle: Homage to the Mexican People ) published by the Taller de Gráfica Popular. The plates depict important moments and figures in Mexico’s history, such as Cuauhtémoc and Benito Juarez.  

The new exhibitions will be on view until the end of the Fall semester.
