Astrodome Memories Project to Host Scanning Event

The Houston Public Library’s Astrodome Memories project will host an oral history and scanning event on Saturday, August 8, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to preserve and share experiences of the 8th Wonder of the World.

Members of the public can bring in their Astrodome-related items, including photos, posters, game programs, souvenirs, and other memorabilia, to be added to the materials already available online. Oral histories will be recorded, and Texas Archive of the Moving Image will be available to collect Astrodome films and videos for free digitization.

Project partners, including the University of Houston Libraries Special Collections, have contributed materials to provide access to a broad collection of archives related to the construction of the Astrodome, as well as memorabilia documenting the use of the Astrodome for the last fifty years.

Libraries to Host Open House for Students

As part of the University of Houston Weeks of Welcome, the UH Libraries will welcome students back to campus during its Just Ask! Libraries Open House.

Students are encouraged to drop by the MD Anderson Library on Monday, August 24, or Tuesday, August 25, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to learn more about the Libraries’ services and programs.

Staff will be stationed at a table in the library atrium, providing informational handouts, answering general questions, and giving away snacks.

First-Ever Artist Health and Wellness Event Slated for Fall 2015

The University of Houston Libraries will host the Artist Health and Wellness Colloquium and Resource Fair on October 3, 2015, the first of its kind at the University.

This free, day-long event is open to students, faculty and staff, and the general public, and will be held at the MD Anderson Library. The event is designed to increase access to information and resources on safe and healthy practices for artists and performers through a unique learning experience, by bringing together community artists, health professionals and arts organizations.

“Artists in all genres have specific issues in wellness that are unique to their profession,” said Stephanie Lewin-Lane, coordinator of the UH Music Library and one of the event organizers. “A solid understanding of safe and healthy practices within their field will ensure that they are able to create within their art form for many, many years.”

Aspiring and working artists will learn techniques for maintaining good health and ways to avoid overstressing the body as they practice their art. Scholars will also present both historical and trending perspectives on the intersection of art and health science. Topics of particular interest to performing artists include repetitive motion, nutrition, voice scoping, stress management, performance anxiety, and body alignment. The event will culminate with a resource fair.

C. Richard Stasney, deputy chief of otolaryngology at The Methodist Hospital, will deliver the keynote address, with an introduction by Jefferson Todd Frazier, director of the Center for Performing Arts Medicine at The Methodist Hospital. Breakout session speakers include Stacey Gorniak, assistant professor of health and human performance at UH; John Harvey, director of the Center for Creative Work, Honors College, UH; and Teresa Chapman, associate professor of dance, UH.

UH Librarian Conducts Workshop in Colombia

A University of Houston librarian recently traveled internationally to provide instruction on resource description and access (RDA) cataloging.

Heylicken “Hayley” Moreno, resource description coordinator in the department of Metadata and Digitization Services, developed and instructed a two-day workshop on RDA cataloging in Spanish for the conference “Present and Future of Cataloging Standards,” held in Bogotá and Cartagena, Colombia.

The conference provided participants with practical experience in cataloging with RDA, and presented new developments that are occurring in the US with BIBFRAME, a bibliographic model that uses linked data. Moreno’s workshop focused on the current practices that have been put in place with RDA, and guided catalogers in the application of these new changes with various formats including audiovisual and electronic resources.

Four universities helped sponsored this event: Universidad de Bogotá Jorge Tadeo Lozano, Universidad de Cartagena, Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar, and Fundación Universitaria Tecnológico Comfenalco with the support of Referencistas S.A.S.

Expansion of Houston Hip Hop Collections

University of Houston Libraries Special Collections announces three major enhancements to the Houston Hip Hop Collections, the region’s definitive archive of hip hop music and culture.

Photographer Peter Beste and journalist Lance Scott Walker have entrusted UH Special Collections with materials related to the production of their 2013 book, Houston Rap, nine years in the making. The book documents the lives of Houston hip hop musicians, both renowned and underground, as well as the changing urban neighborhoods from which the sound developed. The Peter Beste and Lance Scott Walker Houston Rap Collection contains photographic prints, digital images, audio interviews, correspondence, posters, T-shirts, artifacts and more, providing an in-depth look at Houston’s home-grown rap scene.

Preservation work on a prominent audio component of the Houston Hip Hop Collections has recently been completed, expanding access to one-of-a-kind recordings of Houston hip hop artists. Students and scholars now have the option to come to the Special Collections reading room and hear mp3 files of the separate tracks of master recordings from Keenan “Maestro” Mosley’s Samplified Digital Recording Studios, including several sets by DJ Screw. The original recordings were captured on the now obsolete Alesis digital audio tape (ADAT) format.

Cataloging of the DJ Screw Sound Recordings, the original vinyl records from which the DJ made his influential mixtapes, has been completed, increasing the materials’ online discoverability. More information about the DJ Screw sound recordings use policy can be found here.

Distinguished Art and Architectural Library Collection Gifted to UH Libraries

Sir Mark Fehrs Haukohl, president of The Vero Group, a family investment office based in Houston, has given an important art and architectural book collection to the University of Houston Libraries. Newly appointed Dean of Libraries, Lisa German, and Dr. Patricia Oliver, Dean of the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture, will formally receive the collection on August 18, 2015 at a ceremony to occur at the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture. The collection provides a rich resource for art and architecture students. Sir Mark commented, “It is part of our family’s stated philanthropic goal to encourage a dialogue between art and architecture. We particularly hope our collection of Italian Old Master art and drawings books from around the world will encourage young students to take an active interest in the topic.” Sir Mark went on to say “The University of Houston is an institution dedicated to cultural diversity. We want to assist Dr. Renu Khator, President and Chancellor of the University of Houston System, in the broader ongoing effort toward achieving a greater global and cultural pluralism.”

The Haukohl Art and Architectural Collection comprises extensive museum and exhibition catalogs as well as documents the inventories of old master drawings around the world. It is the largest art book collection at the University. The items are immediately available for check-out by students, faculty, staff and other library patrons at the MD Anderson Library. While many items in the collection are related to studies of European masters, students and scholars of art will also benefit from the collection’s works on modern and contemporary artists, spanning decades of multiple styles and genres. The Art and Architectural Library Collection represents the long-standing dedication of Sir Mark to the arts. Many selections from his collection of Italian old master paintings, sculpture and drawings from Florence in the 17^th century can be found at museums around the world. Sir Mark actively contributes to the advancement of Italian culture and art as a co-founder of The Medici Archive Project in Florence, a non-profit international foundation. The Project exists to catalog and inventory three hundred years of original Medici Archive documents, as well as translation and transposing online.

The Haukohl family has had a multi-generational relationship with the people and art of Italy and, under the direction of Sir Mark, holds the largest private collection of Florentine Baroque art outside of Italy. Elements of The Haukohl Family Art Collection have been exhibited at Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, the National Gallery of Ireland, The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Meadows Museum in Dallas, to name only a few. Most recently, selections from the Italian Collection opened at the Muscarelle Museum of Art in Colonial Williamsburg, VA, on display through January 17, 2016.

In addition to Sir Mark’s rare archive and book interests, he has, since the year 2000, created the largest collection in the world of contemporary women photography. The collection is focusing on documenting the work of women photographers across Europe. Selections from The European Women of the 21^st Century, may be found at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Peabody Essex Museum of Boston, the Menil Collection and the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Sir Mark has donated significant time, effort and resources to the University of Houston over the last 30 years. In 1984, Sir Mark, in moving from New York, joined the Board of Directors of the Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston and generously lent and contributed to their exhibitions. For over a dozen years Sir Mark lent his efforts as a Board of Directors member of the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston. He is also a long standing member of the University’s In Tempore Legacy Society. Through his additional outside efforts, the Diana Foundation has been a generous supporter of the University’s LGBT programs. As chairman of the Financial Executives International Houston Chapter Scholarship Foundation, the three campuses of the University of Houston annually receive scholarships for deserving finance and accounting students.

Ferimer Awarded AHIP Membership

Suzanne Ferimer, librarian and director of learning resources at the Weston A. Pettey Optometry Library, has been awarded senior level membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) by the Medical Library Association (MLA).

The peer-reviewed professional development and career recognition program recognizes achievements in continuing education, teaching, publishing, research, and other contributions to the profession. The AHIP credential signifies the highest standards of professional competency and achievement in the field of healthcare information.

Ferimer has coordinated the operations of the Optometry Library for over three decades, serving the teaching, learning, and research objectives of the UH College of Optometry. Ferimer is a member of the MLA, Texas Medical Center Health Information Librarians, South Central Chapter/South Central Regional Group of the MLA, and the Association of Vision Science Librarians. Her most recent presentation on the development of new standards in vision science libraries was delivered at the 2014 American Academy of Optometry.

Librarian Emerita

Pat Bozeman’s nomination as Librarian Emerita has been approved by the University of Houston System Board of Regents.

Bozeman joined the University of Houston in 1984. Two years later, she was appointed head of Special Collections and at the time of her retirement in January 2015, held the Emily Scott Evans Endowed Library Professorship.

Through Bozeman’s work with faculty, library and university donors, and the Houston community, significant national and international collections were created. Her scholarly contributions included a seminal book, Forged Documents: Proceedings of the 1989 Houston Conference, which addressed a major issue in the rare books and manuscripts world.

Bozeman produced award-winning published catalogs, and was active as a frequent invited speaker and organizer of major conference and workshop events. Her professional engagement at the University included roles ranging from the Faculty Senate to the University Commission on Women.
