USS Houston Blue Bonnets Now Available in the Digital Library

One of the exciting features of the Blue Bonnet collection is that it is full text searchable within the image. This will be a real help to researchers.

Blue Bonnets

The Blue Bonnet was the shipboard newsletter of the USS Houston (CA-30), a World War II-era heavy cruiser that was named for the city of Houston. The Houston was sunk in 1942 during the Battle of Sunda Strait, and her surviving crew members made prisoners-of-war. This collection includes the ship’s newsletters from the years 1933 through 1941, although not all issues are available. The newsletters are part of the larger Cruiser Houston Collection, an archival collection that documents the history of the ship and her crew. The Blue Bonnet was revived after the war by the USS Houston Survivors Association and Next Generations, and issues from the 2000s may be viewed online at their web site.

Off-campus authentication moving to CougarNet

Due to security concerns about use of the Peoplesoft number to log-in to library databases from off campus, a CougarNet log-in will be required for authentication as of August 1, 2010. This will only affect off-campus authentication. If you do not have an CougarNet account or have forgotten your username and/or password, please call Campus IT at 713-743-1411 or go to http://www.uh.edu/infotech/php/template.php?account_id=57 . If you are faculty or staff of the University and use the University’s Exchange email system for email and calendaring, this is the same username and password.

What was Houston Like in 1911?

UH Libraries is proud to announce that the Gladys Ewing Debutante scrapbook is now available in the Digital Library!

Click here to see the entire collection.

This is a scrapbook kept by Houston debutante, Gladys Ewing, daughter of Judge Kittridge and Mrs. Kittridge Ewing. The ephemeral contents of the album include invitations, notes, dance cards, and much more — all in the beautifully graphic, formality and color of the Edwardian period. Miss Ewing starts saving these items during the very formal No-Tsu-Oh Houston Social Season in the fall of 1911 and continues through the winter Mardi Gras celebrations, Krewe parties and such. She was, it seems, the premier debutante of that season and served as Maid of Honor to the No-Tsu-Oh queen.
