The University of Houston’s Creative Writing Program, 1979-1989
“The First Decade of the University of Houston’s Creative Writing Program, 1979-1989” (PDF) is a look back on the founding and first decade of one of the top creative writing programs in the nation.
The article also serves as a sneak peek into an upcoming exhibit, Storied: The First Ten Years of the Creative Writing Program. The exhibit’s soft opening will launch on August 31, 2016, with a reception in the Rockwell Pavilion on September 14.
UH Special Collections Interactive Exhibit
The University of Houston Libraries Special Collections utilized iPads to enhance a display at a recent UH Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies event, marking a milestone in the Libraries’ continual efforts to expand access to collections.
In the pop-up exhibit held alongside the event, Samina Ali on Muslim Women and Digital Activism, Christian Kelleher, head of Special Collections, and archivist Vince Lee, archivist of the Carey C. Shuart Women’s Archive and Research Collection, introduced the iPad app that allowed users to interact with audio and video files housed in Special Collections.
The app supplemented physical materials also on display at the event. It is the first such instance of the Libraries’ use of interactive exhibits and digital interfaces that bring the exploration of unique collections to a wider audience.
Special Collections Images on CBS This Morning
CBS This Morning produced a segment on a little-known baseball player and University of Houston graduate named John Paciorek, who played exactly one game in the major leagues before a back injury prevented him from playing again. Since he had a statistically perfect game on that day (September 29, 1963) as a player with the Houston Colt 45s in their final game of the season against the New York Mets, he now holds the record as having the best career record in the history of Major League Baseball.

Archival images from University of Houston Special Collections were used in this CBS This Morning story on John Paciorek.
CBS requested images from UH Special Collections for this story, which can be viewed at http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/pacioreks-perfect-mlb-stats-after-one-day-career/. Images from Special Collections were shown at the 1:08 mark (team color photo) and at the 2:21 mark (Paciorek looking up to make a catch with the 360ft sign in the background.)
