Statement
My art dives into culture and personal interests, using digital art, acrylic, and silkscreen to show its details. Fueled by a need to express myself, I embrace being real and honoring my roots. Each piece is a story, with symbols that add meaning. By arranging things thoughtfully, I lead you on a visual journey that goes beyond the surface. Blending digital finesse and traditional brushwork, I capture both visuals and the emotional depth of cultural experiences. Essentially, my art pays tribute to the threads that connect humanity, inviting dialogue, introspection, and celebration of our shared identity.

General Announcements, New Resource, Special Event or Display

The Architecture, Design, and Art Library proudly presents the work of featured artist ‘23-24 Gerald Sastra. His exhibit,#100iconicwomen, will be on view until March 2024.

Statement
In my artistic journey as a student, I explore the fusion of graphic design and painting, seamlessly weaving these distinct disciplines into a harmonious visual narrative. As a designer, I am drawn to the dynamic possibilities that arise when traditional brushstrokes meet the precision of digital elements. My process begins with a contemplation of the subject, where I strive to grasp its essence and underlying emotions. Once the digital groundwork is laid, I embrace the visceral experience of painting, letting the tactile interaction with traditional media infuse the artwork with an organic and authentic touch. This interplay between the calculated precision of design and the spontaneous flow of paint conceives a unique visual symphony that transcends boundaries, captivating viewers with its innovative language and timeless allure. Through this fusion, I aim to challenge perceptions, ignite curiosity, and inspire a new appreciation for the endless possibilities that lie at the intersection of graphic design and painting.

Bio
Originally from Indonesia, Gerald Sastra is currently pursuing a Graphic Design B.F.A. degree at the University of Houston. He strives to explore each of the design disciplines such as, but not limited to UX/UI, motion, and print. His interests, however, lie in illustration graphics, brand identity, and environmental graphics. He seeks to create meaningful design by being inspired with the content of each design and how it affects us emotionally. While design is his main pursuit, he also enjoys painting and nurtured this innate connection into an artistic journey that continues to evolve.

Featured Artist Jailyne España

General Announcements, New Resource, Special Event or Display

The Architecture, Design, and Art Library proudly presents the work of featured artist ‘23-24 Jailyne España . Her exhibit, Art of the Dead, will be on view until December 2023.

Statement
The everlasting uncertainty that stemmed from my journey with cancer molded my artistic practice into what it is today. My body of work in traditional painting and printmaking examines feelings of fear, absence, nostalgia, and anticipation through altered light, shadow, texture, and perspective. These reimagined spaces depict different dimensions that exist in between what was and what’s next. I aim for the viewer to step into these transitional spaces and see something that is indirectly familiar to them. To experience triggered emotions that come from memory, like the nostalgia of a childhood home, mourning of a loved one, calmness of a Tuesday afternoon, fear of an empty room, yearning of an unknown place. I use different forms of media as reference for my creative work, which include but are not limited to film and photography.

Featured Artist Roslyn M. Dupré

General Announcements, New Resource, Special Event or Display

The Architecture, Design, and Art Library proudly presents the work of featured artist ‘22-23 Roslyn M. DupréHer exhibit, The Persistence of Words, will be on view until May 2023.

Statement
I am a multidisciplinary artist who works with basic materials and traditional craftsmanship to fashion woven, welded or wooden constructions. My materials vary with each project and my methods incorporate domestic handicrafts like hand-weaving, embroidery and knitting with fine art fabrication and foundry work. I am also a Creole woman of color from New Orleans who has lived in Texas for 17 years. Outside of my place of origin—and I am usually outside my place of origin—I am ambiguously other and my work is my response. Central to this work is the personal history of each material I use as my objects do not pretend to be without a past. With mixed media works that include unuseful tools, unwearable clothes, and unfamiliar furnishings, I attempt to conjure a world where superstition and religion, race and gender, and the mystical and the laborious are the foundation stones upon which the home is built. Throughout I allude to the writers of the American South and to a story of identity, unique to time and place. I seek to explore dark themes of inhumanity, blend them with mysticism, and open the door to redemption.

General Announcements, New Resource, Special Event or Display

The Architecture, Design, and Art Library proudly presents the work of featured artist ‘22-23 Kassidi Yosko. Her exhibit, KASSIFYS Hyperrealism, will be on view until December 2022.

Statement
Drawing saved my life multiple times throughout my life. The journey started when I was a little girl and needed to escape from the negativity of the world. You get lost in drawing; it unintentionally became a form of meditation. Every stroke, every detail, my soul goes into every piece. Each time I improve it’s because I went through something and poured those emotions on the paper. These moments’ drive me to do more. To work longer. The long hours and long months I spend using the pencil on one piece… can’t live without that experience. Hopefully the world can see through my work how passionate I am and just how much I love drawing.

Bio
Kassidi Yosko, otherwise known as KASSIFY. 23 years old born and raised in Houston, TX. Been attending UH for 6 years now and in my last year of architecture school. I lost my older brother at the beginning of my college career, then a close friend in the middle, and then my mother a year ago. So outside of architecture I go through so much and art is my ability to get away from all of it. I plan to aim for NYC after graduation for my career in architecture but also so my art can be seen and appreciated on higher levels.
