American Geographic by Tay Butler
Tay Butler is a photographer and collage artist who challenges history and
memory and repurposes archives, found material and original photography to
create both familiar and new compositions and perspectives from which to view
that history. Tay Butler is currently a student at the University of Houston, in his
senior year of the School of Art’s Photography and Digital Media Block Program.
With an expected graduation date of May 2019 and intentions to continue studies
after graduation, Tay is consistently building a portfolio of work and exhibitions
that include spaces all over Houston, TX like the Blaffer Art Museum, Texas Art
Asylum and Noble Artisan.

On display in the upper Mezzanine area throughout the Spring 2019 semester is four plates depicting photographs and technical drawings of the New York Telephone Building from a five volume series of plates titled, American Architecture of the Twentieth Century: A Series of Photographs and Measured Drawings of Modern, Civic and Industrial Buildings.
In the south wing exhibit case, visitors may also view a collection of rare books exploring Japanese woodblock printmaking from the Edo period. The display includes a Hokusai manga original plate, a few samples of Ukiyo-e style paintings and prints, as well as a brief explanation of the relief printmaking process.
