Good Things in the Basement

Contract work is proceeding well in the basement.  Add to that the weekend efforts of the UH custodial team and we have working and clean mobile ranges.

This is at the start of the Bound Journal call number wrap of the basement’s layout.  So we (Shelving Services) are now moving Bound Journals back to the their permanent home.  In Big Shift terms, Bound Journals are moving from area C to area A.

This area remains staff-only access.  A good portion has been moved so I will post call number guide signs today so staff can easily find a requested item.  Despite being in proper order entrance to these areas is still through the contractor’s active work site. Thus public access will not be possible until after all the contractor’s work is done.  I will make a separate post for that.

Buzzin’ Along-Note On Staff Access

The removal of decking in areas A & B is complete. The unoccupied part of area C will have its decking removed this week & next.

Bound Journals A-GB2402 remain staff access only.

The area of removed decking overlaps into Bound Journals a smidgen–just a hand full of aisles for Bound Journals A-B. Even with the contractors working on the empty part of Area C staff can still access Bound Journals A-GB2402 from one end of that section or the other.

Book Move-Current Progress

We are moving books from 3 brown to the 4th floor.

4 blue begins with PB1 and the highest book call number moved there is:

PN9999.

This marks the highest numbered book that will be moved for a while.

Developments in the basement mean The Big Shift will focus on Bound Journals for a while, i.e. possibly to through December.

(Note that 4 brown contains books HQ770-PA9999.)

Buzzsaws In The Basement

Contractor work has begun on area A of the compact shelving.  As of the first hour of their work, it has been relatively quiet but they may be cutting through the decking or grinding on the floor bolts at anytime.  At this point it is reasonable to expect that the decking removal for areas A & B will extend through the next week or two.  Another contractor will shortly be following behind them to clean out under the decking.  Then new decking will be installed.

All materials in the basement are currently not affected by this work.

Basement-Note To Staff

Pending date confirmations from the contractors the removal of the Ike-affected decking will commence soon.

That means:

1) In the summer Shelving moved Bound Journals A-GB2402 over into area C. That way once the fixes get rolling the work flow is better for us and Bound Journal moves to the basement can resume sooner.

2) A heck of a lot of noise while the old stained/damaged decking is removed and replaced.
Staff will have access to Bound Journals A-GB2402 for most of the process. I will make a separate post on that point if it changes. Bound Journals GB2403+ will remain unaffected by this process until mid-October.
