A new version of Grove/Oxford Music Online was released on December 7, 2017, resulting in some changes to the interface and consequent user issues.
In response, the Music Library Association (MLA) will host a temporary blog list of questions, tips, and updates about the new version. The blog will also accept submissions of new issues and tips through a form located in the post.
As we get close to the end of the semester, don’t forget that our Music Resources Guide has a ton of helpful tips and resources. You may find the Cite It and HELP! tabs particularly useful. Of course, if you get stuck, you can always email the Music Librarian to set up a one-on-one consultation.

Tip no. 1: Can’t find a sonata, concerto, symphony, etc.? Pluralize the musical form for better results (“sonatas” instead of “sonata”).
EXAMPLE: Search for “beethoven” AND “sonatas” AND “violin” instead of “beethoven violin sonata”. See for yourself what a difference this simple trick can make in your catalog searches.
More and more classes are using ebooks, so here are a few tips for finding them @ the Library.
- You can find an ebook the same way you find a print book. Search for it using the Library Catalog.
- Don’t limit your search to the Music Library. Limit it to the UH Main Campus.
- You can Limit by Format, so the catalog will just look for ebooks.
Still can’t find the ebook you’re looking for? Stop by the Music Library and ask one of our helpful staff for assistance!
