Faculty Workshop, March 2nd, 2006

Below are the answers to some questions asked by participants at the EndNote faculty workshop, held March 2nd, 2006 at the UH Libraries:

Q: Are there any particular rules for entering keywords?

A: One way to enter keywords is to put each keyword on one line.  You can also use characters such as the semicolon (;) or backslash (\) to separate keywords (EndNote 9 recognizes both of these delimiters by default).

You can customize the delimiters used to separate keywords by going to: Tools > Open Term Lists > Keyword Term List and selecting the {Lists} tab.

Q: Can I insert page numbers on-the-fly while writing my document instead of using the Edit Citations option from the toolbar?

A: Unfortunately, there is no way using EndNote to insert page numbers on-the-fly.  One option, however, would be to type the page number(s) yourself immediately after inserting the citation into your paper, enclosing them in square brackets, parentheses or using some other mark you select to distinguish them.

Example:  In the 13th century, soap was in short supply. (Johnson, 1988) [p35].

Q: Can I insert citations into footnotes or endnotes in my paper?

A: Yes you can!  Use the appropriate WORD command to insert the footnote into your paper.  Then insert the EndNote citation as you normally would.  You will, however, have to review the output style (APA, MLA, etc.) you have chosen to be sure the footnote citations format as you want them to.  In EndNote’s Help, search for Bibliography and Footnote Templates for more information.

Q: Can I copy references from one EndNote library to another?

A: Yes! Simply highlight the reference you wish to copy in one library, select Edit > Copy, switch to the other library, then select Edit > Paste. If you need to copy all of the references in one library to another library, you can also use the File > Import command to directly import one library into the other.

There were several other questions to which I do not yet have adequately-researched answers.  These include using EndNote with WordPerfect, tips for Mac users, and others.  Look for more answers in an upcoming blog entry.

Your comments are welcomed, especially if you have tips to share for faster or better ways to use EndNote!
