Searching the UH Catalog WITHIN EndNote or EndNote Web
Did you know you can search the UH Library Catalog from within EndNote or EndNote Web? Yes, you can!
In EndNote Web, from the “Collect” tab, select “Online Search.” Then click “Customize this list” and find the U Houston entry. Copy it to your favorites, then select it and you’ll have a search box to use.
Perform your search, then select the records you want to import into your library. There’s a video here: http://screencast.com/t/CDOLRG4Dwn that will show you how to do it.
In the standalone versions of EndNote, (X, X2, X3), use the “Online Search” function under the Tools menu. It appears that for EndNote X3, UH is not included with the installation, but it can be downloaded from the support site.
Use this link to download the connection file. Save it to the Connections folder nestled inside your EndNote program folder (Program Files>EndNote>Connections). Once you’ve done this, you can then search the UH catalog within EndNote.
As always, don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions or problems.
Best,
Lee
Helpful Tip
When exporting records from a database for import into EndNote Web, add the database name to the end of your filename:
“bananasSearch_Ebsco” or “bananasSearch_Ebsco_PsycINFO”
This way, you’ll be able to quickly identify the filter you need for importing the records into EndNote Web.
Have a great weekend!

Pitfall ALERT! – Author names don’t import properly from ABI/Inform
Greetings all!
Be aware that when importing references from ABI/Inform (ProQuest platform), author names do not import correctly using the default settings. They are imported First Name Last Name and should be manually corrected before saving the references.
The proper format for author names in EndNote is: Last Name, First Name.
I am investigating and will post a follow-up to this entry if I can locate a workaround for you. Or, if you have already found one and want to share it, please email me at lahilyer@uh.edu with the details.

Importing References – Updated PDF
Happy Holidays!
Ebsco recently updated their EbscoHost search interface used for many of the Libraries’ databases (Academic Search Premier, ERIC, MEDLINE, etc.).
They have simplified the export process a bit, getting rid of the confusing Bibliographic Manager tab.
I have posted an updated copy of a PDF guide to importing references. You can find it at:
http://www.hilyer.info/media/ImportingRefs.pdf
If you want to see all of the PDF handouts, visit http://www.hilyer.info/endnote.html

Google Scholar and EndNote
For those EndNote users who search Google Scholar, you can easily import those references into your EndNote library.
Visit http://www.endnote.com/support/Faqs/Import/faq11.asp for the details. Users with version X for Windows will need to download an updated import filter first (link available at page above).
Questions?
Please feel free to contact me anytime with your EndNote questions.
