We’ve Got a New Name!

The EndNote blog has changed its name to the “Citation Management Tools” blog to better reflect the changing content. The UH Libraries now have access to several citation management tools (EndNote, EndNote Web, RefWorks) and there are several other options (Zotero, MS WORD) for citation management now available.

Follow this blog for advice and information on using citation management tools to help you with your research, and if you have any questions, please contact me!

EndNote Web Now Available

EndNote Web is now available through ISI’s Web of Knowledge and directly at: http://www.myendnoteweb.com/.

You can easily import citations from WoK searches (Web of Science, Science Citation Index, etc.) and shuttle them back and forth between the web and the EndNote library on your computer.

Check out its features and see if it works for you!

How-To Guides Now Available!

Greetings!

I have just posted three new How-To Guides for the latest version of EndNote (version X), though users of versions 8 and 9 will also find them useful.

  • Entering References Manually
  • Importing References from a Database
  • Inserting References Into an EndNote Library

You’ll find them all at: http://www.hilyer.info/endnote.html.

EndNote X now available!

A new version of EndNote is available for purchase either from ISI ResearchSoft or through the UH Information Technology software program (for $23.00!!!)

New in version X:

  • Link and organize PDFs easily – drag and drop PDF files to an EndNote record for automatic linking and storage, saving steps and never break links.
  • Display more fields in the reference list – configure up to eight fields.
  • View reference information with more flexibility – see more or less detail as desired.
  • Simplify moving EndNote libraries between computers – create a single file backup including linked PDF file for easy transfer.
  • Connect and publish with new and updated connection files, import filters and output styles – create bibliographies in over 2,300 styles.

Of special note is the new relative linking for PDFs.  Now you can easily use EndNote to help you keep track of your PDF reprint collection.

Classes will be offered in the fall on using EndNote X – watch the library website for announcements when the final class schedule is available.

Best,

Lee

Windows Live Academic Search Supports EndNote (Somewhat)

Microsoft’s new search engine for research, Windows Live Academic Search is available in beta form at: http://academic.live.com. It currently indexes the fields of physics, electrical engineering, computer science and related subjects (i.e., mathematics).

A bare-bones EndNote citation format is provided but there is no automatic download.  You will probably have to cut and paste the citations into a text file for manual import into EndNote.

Send me your comments!

Best,

Lee

EndNote WEB to be available in ISI Web of Knowledge!

ISI has announced that a web-based version of EndNote will be available as part of their Web of Knowledge product (Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index, Arts & Humanities Citation Index) this fall.

"As a new personalization option within ISI Web of Knowledge, EndNote Web expands reference management capabilities to the Web. It is the ideal, time-saving solution for students and researchers:

  • Undergraduate students can organize their references for citing in papers
  • Professional reseachers and graduate students can use EndNote Web as the perfect complement to EndNote and other desktop writing tools, storing references between ISI Web of Knowledge search sessions "

Onfolio No Longer Available with EndNote compatibility

I just learned (a little late) that Microsoft has acquired the Onfolio product (www.onfolio.com) and is integrating its capabilities into the new Windows Live Toolbar.  Unfortunately, this new toolbar won’t have EndNote integration and will lack some of the features found in the standalone version.

Users of standalone Onfolio products with EndNote integration should keep using those.  Microsoft has no plans to upgrade them but you should be able to continue using them for the foreseeable future.

If you were planning to buy Onfolio, you are out of luck, as it is no longer for sale.

Of course, you could always try and lobby Microsoft to include this feature again at some point in the future.

Be on the lookout for EndNote functionality to be available in the ISI databases (Science Citation Index; Social Sciences Citation Index; Arts & Humanities Citation Index) in the next few months. (EndNote is owned by Thomson ISI.)

Welcome to the EndNote blog!

Welcome to the new EndNote blog!

This blog will cover resources related to using and customizing EndNote, a bibliographic citation manager.

The UH Libraries teach occasional classes on using EndNote, and many of the Libraries’ databases offer Direct Export, which enables you to quickly and easily import citations directly from a database into an EndNote library, saving you hours of tedious retyping.

UH Information Technology (PGH 116; 3-1411) sells EndNote 9 for Mac or Windows for $23.00!

You can find general information about EndNote at: http://www.endnote.com/ and additional tips and helpful info at: http://www.hilyer.info/endnote.html.

If you need one-on-one assistance with EndNote, please contact Lee Andrew Hilyer at lahilyer@uh.edu or 3-9721.
